The white is dense enough to hide the lamps completely. From any chair at a table you see glowing glass, never a filament. A chandelier made entirely of opal glass would be gentle and slightly dull. One made entirely of clear glass would sparkle and dazzle. This is both, and the petals are cut so you get each where it belongs. The petals overlap like scales in descending tiers, each row sitting partly behind the one above. Light passes through more than one before it leaves, which is why the glow deepens toward the centre and pales at the outer tips — depth of glass rather than a printed gradient.
